The number indicates the fine gold content of a piece of jewellery – in other words, how much pure gold it contains. Pure gold is too soft and too expensive, and therefore unsuitable for jewellery. That's why it's mixed with other metals to form what's called an alloy. 375 gold is an affordable way to get a golden colour on a limited budget. 585 gold (14 carat) contains 58.5% pure gold, resulting in a high-quality yet everyday-suitable ring. 750 gold (18 carat), by contrast, is 75% fine gold, giving it a more intense colour and a higher price.
Ultimately, taste, budget and your everyday life determine which alloy suits you best.
The price of gold wedding rings depends largely on the fine gold content. The amount of material, determined by shape, width and height, is also a key factor. Additional cost factors can include unusual designs or diamond settings. As a result, the cost for a pair of gold wedding rings is often in the four-figure range.
